Kit AstroMedia for building the "Luminescent Moon".
...It could also be called a luminescent moon.
This detailed depiction of the lunar surface was printed on a special self-adhesive film that charges in sunlight or artificial light and remains illuminated for many hours. Even at the end of the night, the moon stands out with a faint glow in the darkness. This not only has a pleasantly calming effect, but can also be an important aid to orientation in the dark. For this reason, safety signs and signs made of this material are also found in important places in many public and commercial buildings.
A small light storage system
To charge the film, it is necessary to expose it to strong light for a few minutes. The afterglow effect occurs immediately. However, since it is naturally much weaker than the light source or ambient light, our eyes perceive it only in the dark; as soon as our eyes get used to it, the glow effect becomes more and more visible.
Scientifically, this light-preserving effect is called phosphorescence. It was first discovered in 1602 by Vincentio Casciorolo on the so-called Bolognese luminescent stone and a few decades later also on the chemical element phosphorus, from which it takes its name. Today numerous substances are known to glow in this way. Phosphorescent pigments are embedded in our film in an airtight and impermeable manner. The phosphorescent moon is therefore non-toxic and suitable for children's rooms.
