Decorative print of an image of the James Webb Space Telescope. NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI
"Webb's First Deep Field" is the name of the first image released by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) after its launch from Earth in December 2021. The image, taken with a near-infrared camera, shows the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 in the Flying Fish constellation, 4.6 billion light-years away, and was obtained in more than 12 hours as a composite of several images at different wavelengths.
At the same time, the JWST was able to capture light from even more distant galaxies, which traveled the incredible 13.1 billion-year journey and were thus emitted "only" 700 million years after the Big Bang.
