NWA 869 meteorites informations
The kit contains a real meteorite fragment that fell on Earth. In this case the origin of the fragment is a desert region located near Tindouf, in Algeria, and discovered in 2000. The meteorite is classified as fragmentary chondrite type L3-6 and took the name of NWA 869.
Based on the measurements made by the experts, the diameter of this meteorite at the time of its entry into the atmosphere was estimated to be 225 ± 25 cm. This size corresponds to a mass between 120-230 tons. About 7 tons of fragments of various sizes have been recovered from this huge initial mass. This means that between 90% and 95% of the mass was lost by ablation during atmospheric high-speed passage.
The estimated terrestrial age is 4,400 years (± 700 years), an estimate consistent with the relatively low degree of degradation caused by the atmospheric agents detected.
Authenticity certificate
Any meteorite fragment arrives with a certificate issued by Luc Labenne, member of the Meteoritical Society and one of the world major expert in the field.
